Toyota has presented its nostalgic-looking 4Runner TRD Surf Concept at the 2024 SEMA show, paying tribute to surf culture and the original 4Runner’s Californian spirit. With a combination of the iconic design inspired by the 80s beach life and innovative 2025 tech, this concept, created by Toyota Motorsports Garage, channels the vibe of the freewheeling, next-to-the-ocean lifestyle that once made the 4Runner a cultural staple.
Built from the new 2025 4Runner TRD Limited, the TRD Surf Concept boasts a 2.4L turbocharged engine with 278 horsepower, 317 pounds-feet of turning force, and an exhaust note to attract anyone’s attention. Its retro-inspired, 3D printed removable roof is a stand-out feature, reminiscent of the original 4Runner’s open-air look.
“We wanted to create something that would resonate today while paying homage to the past,” said lead builder Marty Schwerter.
To keep up with any adventure, the TRD Surf features a long-travel suspension, 37-inch tires on custom wheels, and a ruggedized interior with waterproofed floors and custom surfboard storage. Toyota’s team thoroughly crafted the removable top in-house, using the most advanced CAD and 3D printing techniques to ensure a perfect fit.
To sum up, as Toyota’s VP of Marketing Mike Tripp said, “Who doesn’t love a concept dedicated to surfing?”
