Despite a lot of creative advertising for reusable mugs, many still use disposable plastic cups, which mostly end up in landfills, lingering for decades. Recognizing this challenge, a team of designers has launched Loop, a cutting-edge 3D printer concept tasked with the mission of recycling plastic cups directly in cafés and restaurants.
Similar to a standard beverage dispenser, Loop integrates effortlessly into existing food service setups. The system includes heating and cooling chambers, a grinder, and a filament extruder, which together turn used plastic cups into handy items like scrubbers and other essential restaurant supplies.
In addressing waste management in 3D printing, the device puts a pressing environmental issue in the spotlight: even recyclable materials in the industry often become landfill waste. Not only does Loop recycle cups, it also eliminates the environmental impact of support structures used in conventional 3D printing. The stylish design is available in two colors, both options featuring a black hot-end for a polished look.
Developed by Minjoeng Kim, Yoonjeong Lee, Songhee Kim, Changyu Seo, and Geunyeong Do, the initiative promotes sustainability using a points-based reward system for customers, encouraging them to return their used plastic cups. With this approach, it looks like Loop can easily transform food service waste into a model for circular economy innovation.
