Lemontron launches a downloadable, open-source 3D printer

We bet you wondered at least once if you could 3D print a 3D printer. Not quite yet, but we’re getting there: Lemontron offers the chance to build your own portable 3D printer through their open-source project. The “zesty portable 3D Printer that fits in a box of filament” is designed to be assembled at an approximate cost of $413, using mostly off-the-shelf components. The hot-end and heated bed are sourced from KB-3D, while most of the other components can be found on AliExpress, with a few parts from DigiKey. Additionally, you’ll need a custom PCB, which can be ordered from your preferred board manufacturer. Once built, the DIY upside-down 3D printer is amazingly compact while offering a print plate size comparable to industrial printers.

In the world of entry-level 3D printers, most of the devices are typically bulky, but Lemontron boasts elegant portability. Although the project is open source and offers downloadable files, you will still need to invest in materials for the printer’s parts. Additionally, it requires access to a 3D printer for its construction, so it is not an ideal choice for a first or primary 3D printer. Nevertheless, compared to other DIY kits for 3D printing on the market, it is a budget-friendly alternative.

Evolving from the Positron printer, Lemontron is appealing not just for the idea of actually assembling your own desktop 3D printer as a cool DIY challenge. beyond the satisfaction from the build process, be sure Lemontron will reward you with a device that stands out from the abundance of cheap 3D printers

If you’re ready to get started, check out Lemontron’s guide for a quick overview of building the printer. While not a step-by-step instruction, it gives you a clear idea of what to expect before diving in. As a bonus, the video highlights the design philosophy, emphasizing off-the-shelf components over custom parts to smoothly integrate the printed parts.
