Autodesk Discontinues (Free) Photogrammetry Solution ReMake

Autodesk ReCap 360, including the web-based interface, has been discontinued on December 1, 2017. The photogrammetry functionality will be moved into Autodesk ReCap Pro as a feature called ReCap Photo. I have reviewed this software separately.

When it comes to photogrammetry-based 3D capture, Autodesk has been making a lot of decisions in a short period of time. First they discontinued the popular 12D Catch apps. Then they released their new Memento beta application as ReMake. And shortly after that, they discontinued the Mac version, making it Windows-only.

Recently, Autodesk has decided to stop offering the standalone ReMake (read my Full Review) application altogether on December 1st, 2017. This change impacts both the Free & Edu versions of the application and the Pro subscription. The company’s photogrammetry service will become part of ReCap Pro under the name ReCap Photo.

It’s not possible anymore to get a subscription to ReMake since September 7th, so you’ll have to get a subscription to ReCap Pro to be able to use Autodesk’s excellent photogrammetry engine. If you already have a ReMake subscription, you can use it until the end of your contract.

However, the new ReCap Photo feature will be available from December 1st so if you don’t have a ReMake subscription between September 7th and December 1st, you have no professional options for photogrammetry from Autodesk.

You can still use the free, web-based ReCap 360 workflow (Review) but that service will also be discontinued and moved into ReCap Photo. This service is free up to 50 photos with Standard-quality processing.

Altogether, this means that from December 2017 there will be no free photogrammetry solutions from Autodesk anymore, and no standalone application for just photogrammetry. The only free photogrammetry solution is currently 3DF Zephyr.

It remains to be seen how much focus Autodesk will continue to have on photogrammetry for scanning objects. This was the main focus of ReMake while ReCap has always been, and will probably continue to be, marketed towards Aerial Surveying and combining laser scan data of terrains with data captured through photogrammetry.

For now, the introduction video (embedded at the bottom of this post) of ReCap Photo starts with a choice between Arial and Object so it looks like choosing the latter will basically give you the full ReMake experience.

I hope this is true because ReMake is also great, easy-to-use hi-poly mesh editing tool that offers a fast and comprehensive toolset for fixing, optimizing and exporting complex 3D scan data. I hope these features will be transferred to ReCap Photo.

The upside is that Autodesk has increased the maximum number of photos to 1000 instead of 250, although this might not as important for capturing small-to-medium sized capturing. ReCap photo will also contain new features, largely targeted at Aerial capturing with drones.

Autodesk ReCap Pro — which will include ReMake Photo from December 1st, 2017 — is available as a subscription for $40 per month or $300 per year in the US and €48,40 per month or €393,25 per year in Europe. As an introduction offer, Autodesk offers a 57% discount on a 2-year subscription to ReCap Pro until November 17, 2017.

Of course, I’ll review ReMake Photo as soon as it’s out and do a comparison with ReMake.
