ICON begins construction on 100 3D-printed homes to address homelessness in Austin

ICON, a top-tier name in large-scale 3D printing construction, has announced building 100 3D-printed homes at Community First! Village in partnership with Mobile Loaves & Fishes and Lennar Foundation. The project expands the Village, which has been working to alleviate challenges of Austin’s homeless community for over 26 years.

The new homes, ranging from 35 to 96 square meters, are part of a broader plan adding nearly 1,400 homes to the Village. Once completed, the development will accommodate approximately 1,800 formerly homeless community members. ICON’s Vulcan construction system is 3D printing townhome units and larger homes to cater to both individuals and families.

“Community First! Village is at the center of innovation in our country in terms of communities and movements that are effectively addressing homelessness. With the help from our friends at Lennar Foundation, we can continue our mission to deliver dignified homes for those in need and continue the long-term relationship with Mobile Loaves & Fishes,” stated Brooke Bauguess, VP of Marketing & Communications at ICON.

Lennar Foundation, the charitable arm of leading homebuilder Lennar, continues its Central Texas legacy, including its prior collaboration with ICON on a 100-home 3D-printed community in Georgetown.

There has been plenty of skepticism expressed about 3D printing’s solving the affordable housing challenge. However, recent efforts illustrate a growing commitment from businesses to tackle housing unaffordability and homelessness with this technology. In this case, ICON, Lennar, and a charity are in a strong position to make the project a success for everyone involved.
