CES 2018: Intel Studio’s 10,000 sq. ft. Volumetric Video Capture Area for VR/AR

A few months ago I wrote about Microsoft’s endeavors in creating two studios for capturing volumetric video allowing the creation of moving 3D assets for real-time applications like games, VR and AR. Their setup allowed the performances of one or two people to be captured.

“We have created a new state-of-the-art production studio for immersive media,”

Now Intel has taken this concept a huge step further. According to an article from Variety Intel Studios is now open and has a capture area of no less than 10,000 sq. ft. (or 926 m²).

To accommodate this complex sensor setup they needed a studio of 25,000 sq. ft.

“We have created a new state-of-the-art production studio for immersive media,” Intel Studios director Diego Prilusky recently told Variety. Designing and building out the space took some 18 months.

I’m not sure what sensors are used. You’d imagine that there are thousands of new RealSense depth sensors, that Intel also introduced at CES2018, in there but the articles states “cameras” so I guess they’re arrays of industrial-grade 2D cameras that use photogrammetry algorithms to solve the 3D data on Intel’s super-fast servers that can handle “6 terabytes a minute”. The (renders of the) studios recording booth looks as impressive as the numbers.

I’m very excited about everything related to Volumetric Video and I’m amazed by the vast scale of this project. Can’t wait to see the first content that comes out of this studio!

The images above come from Intel’s cool promo video. They see Volumetric Video as the first big change in the history of cinematography (after sound, color, and digital). I certainly hope that’s true! Here’s the video:
