In the age of smartphones, a phone that’s simply smart – how do you like that? Architect and designer Marko Lazic has just introduced Offone, a 3D-printed phone featuring an e-ink display. Offone is designed for essential communication, supporting only basic apps like calls, texts, and messaging platforms. Its ergonomic design fits comfortably into the palm of your hand, and the e-ink screen, which resembles paper, excludes glare and blue light to reduce eye strain.
With intuitive icons instead of text for navigation, Offone also eliminates language barriers. While essential apps such as maps, Uber, and Waze are supported, any social media ones are off-limits to maintain a minimalist approach. The device intentionally lacks a camera, bringing the nostalgic simplicity of older keypad phones (while still featuring a touchscreen for high-tech functionality).
Lazic is yet to reveal the final screen size of the invention but has identified his target audience: business travelers, grandparents needing a straightforward communication device, and anyone looking to escape the constant panic and anxiety brought by apps and notifications. As of now, the launch date and production timeline for the Offone are unannounced, although the concept has been in the works since 2016, so hopefully it will be ready to hit the market soon.
Offone is a great illustration of a growing trend towards minimalist technology, joining other devices like the Minimal Phone and the AI smartphone A Phone, A Friend. These innovations mark a shift towards simpler, more focused communication tools in the tech industry. With Marko Lazic offering a 3D printed hassle-free phone, we’re back to basics, but in style!
